This firehouse was opened on May 3, 1965 when Engine Company 4 and Ladder Company 24 moved from temporary quarters with Engine 25 & Ladder 8 at 123 Oliver Street, Downtown.
Engine 4 and Ladder 24 had earlier moved from their permanent quarters at the Bowdoin Square firehouse on October 28, 1963. Engine Company 6, also quartered at Bowdoin Square, was disbanded.
The District Chief of District 3 is also quartered at this firehouse.
A plaque is mounted on the exterior of the firehouse to commemorate a firefighter who died in the Line Of Duty.
Engine 4 and Ladder 24 have a large response area, covering all of Downtown, Beacon Hill, North End and parts of the Back Bay. Engine 4 responds to approximately 3300 incidents per year, while Ladder 24 responds to approximately 2600 incidents per year.
The firehouse is located on the north side of Beacon Hill, near Government Center. It is located on Cambridge Street near Joy Street.
