Engine Co. 12 (Fire Companies)

January 6, 1868  –  The City of Roxbury was annexed to Boston. Steam Engine Company 2 of the Roxbury Fire Department became Engine No. 12 of the Boston Fire Department. The steam engine built by L. Button in 1864, Serial # 9, was placed in service on September 9, 1864. The company was quartered in the old Roxbury firehouse at Dudley & Warren Streets , Dudley Square, Roxbury.

June 2, 1868  –  Company named ‘Warren Engine Company 12’.

1873  –  Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 12).

November 20, 1873  –  Company moved to a new firehouse at 198 Dudley Street , corner of Winslow Street, near Dudley Square. The old firehouse at Dudley & Warren Streets was later demolished to widen Warren Street.

June 10, 1874  –  Company reorganized as a Part Permanent company.

September 30, 1880  –  Company exchanged quarters with Ladder Company 4. Engine 12 moved to 407 Dudley Street , near Blue Hill Avenue, Roxbury.

March 27, 1882  – Company received a new 1882 Amoskeag Second Size steam engine, Serial # 562.

September 3, 1884  – Company changed from Call to Permanent status.

September 28, 1902  –  Engineer George W. Barnard, Engine Company 12, was profiled in a Boston Globe newspaper story upon his retirement from the Department. Profile

November, 1904  –  The Amoskeag steam engine, Serial # 562, was returned to Manchester Locomotive Works to be rebuilt.

September 20, 1908  –  Hoseman Matthew Burns, Engine Company 12, was profiled in a Boston Globe newspaper story upon his retirement from the Department. Profile

December, 1911  –  Company received a new Amoskeag Second Size steam engine, Serial # 851. This steamer is the last new steam fire engine placed in service in Boston.

July 19, 1922  –  The horse-drawn apparatus was replaced by a new 1922 American LaFrance, Type 75, 750gpm pumper, Serial # 3914, Shop #148 , and a new 1922 American LaFrance, Type 75, Hose & Chemical Wagon, Serial # 3909, Shop # 339.

March 28, 1923  –  Engine Company 12 responded, along with Engine Company 46, to a major fire at Nantasket Beach, Hull, during very cold conditions. Photo

August 15, 1924  –  Company moved temporarily to the quarters of Ladder Company 4 at 198 Dudley Street.

January 7, 1925  –  Company returned to 407 Dudley Street.

October 23, 1931  –  Company received a new 1931 American LaFrance, Type 212, Hose & Booster Wagon, Serial # 7374, Shop # 386.

September 21, 1938  –  Company moved to the quarters of Ladder Company 4 at 198 Dudley Street. The old firehouse at 407 Dudley Street was to be used as a city paint shop.

11/15/1942  –  Hoseman Edward F. Macomber, Engine Company 12, died in the Line-Of-Duty at the Maverick Square Fire, 12-16 Maverick Square, East Boston, 5 Alarms, Box 6153.

October 16, 1948  –  Company moved back to the firehouse at 407 Dudley Street.

May 24, 1948  –  Company received a new 1948 Mack, Type 85, 750gpm pumper, Serial # 85LS-1252, Shop # 193.

July 23, 1948  –  Company received a new 1948 Mack, Type 85, ‘Cardox’ Hose & Booster Wagon, Serial # 85LS-1249, Shop # 306.

December 10, 1957  –  Company changed from Double-unit to Combination Single/Double-unit operation.

1961  –  Fire Captain Thomas P. Maguire, Engine Company 12, was awarded the Patrick J. Kennedy Medal of Honor, for his actions at 14-16 Linwood Street, Roxbury, on March 13, 1961.

1961  –  Fire Fighter Leonard A. D’Amico of Engine 12 was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

August 24, 1963  –  The 1948 Mack Hose Wagon, Shop # 306 , was involved in a collision with Engine-Squad 14 at Regent & St. James Streets, Roxbury. The Hose Wagon was placed out of service.

December 1, 1964  –  Company received a new 1964 Ward LaFrance, Model P90, 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 64-9012, Shop # 135.

1965  –  Fire Fighter William P. Kenny, Engine Company 12 and Fire Fighter Fred I. Smith, Engine Company 12, were awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

1967  –  Fire Fighter Robert L. Mayhew, Engine Company 12, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

July 19, 1968  –  Company received a new 1968 Ward LaFrance, Model P80, 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 80-236, Shop # 164.

August 5, 1970  –  Company received a new 1970 Hahn, 1250gpm pumper, Serial # C12-34, Shop # 127.

1971  –  Fire Fighter Donald J. LaPorte, Engine Company 12, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

January 20, 1971  –  Company changed to Single-unit operation.

1972  –  Fire Lieutenant George H. Rushton, Engine Company 12, was awarded the John E. Fitzgerald Medal for the Most Meritorious Act of 1972.

August 15, 1973  –  Company received a new 1973 Maxim 1500gpm pumper, Serial # 3136, Shop # 176.

December 18, 1974  –  Company moved to a new firehouse at 174 Dudley Street , corner of Harrison Avenue, Roxbury. The firehouse at 407 Dudley Street was closed.

1977  –  Fire Fighter Paul King, Engine Company 12, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Citation

1980  –  Fire Fighter Timothy T. McGillicuddy, Engine Company 12, and Fire Fighter John P. Carey, Engine Company 12, were awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

April 10, 1981 COMPANY DEACTIVATED.
