This firehouse was opened on May 13, 1977 when Engine Company 40 moved diagonally across the street from their old quarters at 260 Sumner Street. On May 16, Engine Company 9 and Ladder Company 2 moved from their previous location at 60 Paris Street, approximately 4 blocks away.
The new station replaced older aging buildings and was one of several buildings built in the same era with very similar designs. (See Engine 41, Engine 48, Engine 39, Engine 14)
Plaques are mounted on the exterior of the firehouse to commemorate firefighters who died in the Line Of Duty.
The firehouse is located at 239 Sumner Street near the corner of Orleans Street in the Maverick Square area of East Boston. This firehouse serves primarily the Maverick Square area, as well as other sections of East Boston.
