Engine Co. 17 (Fire Companies)

January 3, 1870 – The Town of Dorchester was annexed to the City of Boston. Protector Engine Co. 2 of Dorchester became Protector Engine No. 17, located on Meeting House Hill, Dorchester. The company was equipped with an 1867 Hunneman steam engine, Serial # 687. The firehouse on Parish Street was built in 1867.

1873 – Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 17 – as it remains today).

1890 – Company substituted the 1866 Hunneman steam engine for an 1870 Amoskeag First Size steam engine, Serial # 350.

1896 (circa) – Company substituted the 1870 Amoskeag steam engine for an 1886 Amoskeag Second Size steam engine, Serial # 619.

January 7, 1916 – Company received an 1870 Amoskeag steam engine, Serial # 354, attached to a 1916 Christie Front-Drive 2-wheel tractor, Shop # 109T.

April 25, 1916 – Captain Martin F. Mulligan, Engine Company 17, was profiled in a Boston Globe story. Newspaper story

February 22, 1917 – The horse-drawn Hose Wagon was replaced by a Seagrave Hose & Chemical Wagon, Serial # 16324, Shop # 310.

August 14, 1923 – The 1916 Christie/1872 Amoskeag steam engine was replaced by a 1923 American LaFrance, Type 75, 750gpm pumper, Serial # 4341, Shop # 159.

July 18, 1925 – Due to renovations at Engine 21’s firehouse, Engine 17’s hose wagon moved to the quarters of Ladder 23 at 36 Washington Street, Dorchester. Engine 21’s pumper temporarily moved into Engine 17’s firehouse.

February 17, 1926 – Engine 21’s pumper moved back to its own quarters. Engine 17’s hose wagon returned to its own quarters.

February 15, 1928 – Engine 17 occupied a new firehouse at 7 Parish Street , adjacent to the site of its former quarters.

August 3, 1928 – Company received a new 1928 American LaFrance, Type 112, Hose & Chemical Wagon, Serial # 6320, Shop # 365.

January 12, 1948 – Company received a new 1947 Pirsch 1000gpm pumper, Serial # 1735, Shop # 140.

September 8, 1948 – Company received a new 1948 American LaFrance ‘700 Series’ Hose & Booster Wagon, Serial # L3598, Shop # 311.

May 8, 1958 – Company changed to Single-Double-unit operation.

July 26, 1962 – Company received a new 1962 Ward LaFrance, Type 1120T, 1000gpm pumper, Serial # 62-4790, Shop # 139.

July 15, 1968 – Company received a new 1968 Ward LaFrance, Model P80, 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 80-243, Shop # 170.

1968 – Fire Fighter Thomas W. Nee, Engine Company 17, was awarded the John E. Fitzgerald Medal for the Most Meritorious Act of 1968.

September 9, 1970 – Company received a new 1970 Hahn 1250gpm pumper, Serial # C12-39, Shop # 146.

October 17, 1972 – Company received a 1972 Ford/Maxim ‘Squrt’ Hose Wagon, with a 75ft articulating boom, Serial # C75FVG, Shop # 402.

1973 – Fire Fighter Francis L. Shaughnessey and Fire Fighter Bradley Rattigan, Engine Company 17, were awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

May 3, 1976 – Company received a new 1976 Ward LaFrance ‘Model P80’ 1500gpm pumper, Serial # 80-1246, Shop # 126.

1980 – Fire Fighter Lawrence F. Rocci and Fire Fighter Paul J. Spacco, Engine Company 17, were awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

March 29, 1986 – Company received a new 1986 Emergency One/Ford 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 4760, Shop # 121.

1986 – Fire Fighter (Aide to the District Chief) Francis L. Shaughnessey, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

1988 – Fire Fighter William G. Austin and Fire Fighter Robert T. Lynch, Engine Company 17, were awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Citation

September 14, 1999 – Company received a new 1999 Emergency One ‘Cyclone II’ 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 20199, Shop # 155.

2000 – Fire Lieutenant Joseph G. McNulty, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

2005 – Fire Fighter Kenneth Marrero, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

2006 – Fire Fighter Glenn S. Preston, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation

2010 – Fire Fighter Tyrone Marshall, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Citation

January 17, 2012 – Company received a new 2011 KME ‘Severe Service’ 1250gpm pumper, Serial #8333, Shop # 180.

2013 – Fire Fighter Phillip C. Skrabut, Engine Company 17, was awarded the Edward H. Hommel, M.D., Medal of Honor. Citation

2015 – Fire Fighter Christopher J. Flaherty, Engine Company 17, was awarded the John E. Fitzgerald Medal for the Most Meritorious Act of 2015 for his actions in the waters off South Boston on July 20, 2015. Citation for Fire Fighter Christopher J. Flaherty

2017 – Fire Fighter Phillip C. Skrabut, Engine Company 17, was among a group of firefighters who were awarded the Fire Commissioners Community Service Award for their work on The Burn Foundation. Citation

September 27, 2024 – The company moved from its prior location at 7 Parish Street to a new firehouse on adjacent property, with a new address of 44 Winter Street.
