December 26, 1859 – Steam Engine Company No. 9 placed into service at 60 Paris Street, East Boston, with an Amoskeag First Size steamer, Serial # 4. (Hand) Engine Company 9 was disbanded.
June 2, 1868 – Company named Maverick Engine No. 9
October 14, 1872 – Company received a Hunneman steam engine, Serial # 722.
1873 – Company names discontinued, reverted back to numbered company only (Engine 9 – as it remains today).
May 27, 1874 – Company reorganized as a Part Permanent company.
September 3, 1884 – Changed from Call status to Permanent status.
July 11, 1890 – Moved to a temporary location at the quarters of Engine 11 at 260 Sumner Street, due to construction of a new firehouse on the site of the old firehouse at 60 Paris Street.
March 31, 1891 – Occupied the new firehouse at 60 Paris Street.
September 28, 1902 – Captain Edmund B. Smith, Engine Company 9, was profiled in a Boston Globe newspaper story upon his retirement from the Department. Profile
April 12, 1908 – The ‘First’ Great Fire in Chelsea occurred. Engine 9 was among 14 engine companies, 2 ladder companies and a fireboat sent by Boston on Mutual Aid to Chelsea. The fire consumed 492 acres of land and destroyed 2822 buildings before being extinguished. Companies sent to Chelsea were: Engines Companies 6, 5, 11, 36, 27, 39, 26, 8, 10, 33, 9, 40, 4, 15; Ladder Companies 21, 22; Fireboat Engine 44.
April 22, 1916 – Newspaper story: Profile of Captain Jeremiah F. Gillen of Engine 9.
July 24, 1923 – Company replaced the horse-drawn apparatus with a new 1923 American LaFrance, Type 75, 750gpm motor pumping engine, Serial # 4339, Shop # 156 , and a new 1923 American LaFrance, Type 75, motor Hose & Chemical wagon, Serial # 4348, Shop # 343.
March 23, 1927 – Lieutenant Joseph M. Donovan, Engine Company 9, died in the Line Of Duty while operating at a ship fire, moored at 300 Condor Street, East Boston, 2 alarms Box 648.
August 14, 1930 – Due to firehouse renovations, company moved to the quarters of Ladder 31 at 360 Saratoga Street , East Boston.
January 21, 1931 – Company returned to 60 Paris Street after renovations were completed.
October 22, 1931 – Company received a new 1931 American LaFrance, Type 212, Hose & Booster Wagon, Serial # 7373, Shop # 385.
November 28, 1942 – Engine Company 9 responded to the Cocoanut Grove Fire at 17 Piedmont Street, Downtown. See Engine 9’s Fire Report. Fire Report
March 7, 1945 – Company received a new 1945 American LaFrance ‘600 Series’ 1000gpm pumper, Serial # 8216, Shop # 100.
May, 1948 – Company received a new a 1948 Ward LaFrance, Type 85T, 750gpm pumper, Serial # 48-2327, Shop # 103.
April 5, 1957 – Changed from Double-unit to Single-Unit operations, with a new 1957 Mack Type 125, 1250gpm pumper, Serial # B125F-1028, Shop # 101.
January 6, 1958 – The combination Cardox/Ansul Unit, formerly quartered at Engine Co. 40, was placed in service at Engine 9. The Unit was equipped with a 1930 American LaFrance converted Hose Wagon, Serial # 7231, Shop # 382. Engine Co. 9 will respond with both units to selected boxes and on Special Calls.
December 18, 1970 – Company reeived a 1968 Ward LaFrance Model P80, 1250gpm pumper, ex-Engine 14, Serial # 80-235, Shop # 166.
1972 – Fire Fighter Robert W. Beals was awarded the Roll Of Merit. Citation
November 20, 1976 – Company moved to temporary quarters with Engine 40 at 260 Sumner Street.
December 13, 1976 – Company returned to 60 Paris Street.
May 16, 1977 – Company moved to a new firehouse at 239 Sumner Street , East Boston, along with Engine 40 and Ladder 2. The old firehouse at 60 Paris Street was closed.
June 15, 1981 – Company received a lime-green 1979 Ford/Sutphen 1250gpm pumper, ex-Engine 25, Serial # HS1404, Shop # 119.
June 22, 1984 – Engine 9’s 1979 Ford/Sutphen pumper returned to service painted red.
February 28, 1987 – Company received a new 1987 Emergency One ‘Cyclone’ 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 5292, Shop # 124.
September 16, 2002 – Company received a new 2002 Pierce ‘Enforcer’ 1250gpm pumper, Serial # 1354603, Shop #159.
2015 – Fire Lieutenant Edward M. Kelly, Engine Company 9, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Citation
2018 – Fire Fighter on Probation Michael A. Guerrero, Engine Company 9, was awarded the Edward H. Hommel, M.D. Medal of Honor. Citation
2018 – Four members of Engine Company 9, Senior Fire Fighter Joseph Viola and Fire Fighter (FFOP) Michael A. Guerrero, Fire Fighter Paul A. Edmeade (detailed from Engine 5) and Fire Fighter Michael S. Locust (detailed from Engine 56) were awarded the Fire Commissioner’s Unit Citation for their actions on Border Street, East Boston, on August 10, 2018. Citation
February 13, 2020 – Company received a new 2020 Emergency One ‘Typhoon’ 1250gpm pumper, Shop # 125.
