The fires listed on this page represent a large quantity of major fires that have occurred since the organization of the Fire Department in its present structure (1859), and which have had a significant impact on the City of Boston. The fires listed here mostly involve multiple-alarm fires, or other major emergencies, as these are usually more spectacular, destroy the most property, attract more media attention, and have a significant impact on the citizens sense of well-being and safety. The fires listed here are but a small fraction of the thousands of fires that have occurred in Boston since 1860.
